Stomach noises can be very embarrassing especially if you are in a quiet situation and surrounded by people. We all experience this occasionally of course but it does not make it any easier to deal with. Our advice is not to draw attention to it and hopefully nobody else will notice!

  • One of the most common reasons for stomach noise is hunger. Your stomach growling is a signal that you need to eat so you will stop the noise if you feed it! You may find that eating more regularly will be enough to remedy the problem.
  • If you are not in a position where you can eat a small meal, try drinking a glass of water. Quite often this will be enough to allay stomach noise and ease hunger pangs as well.
  • Eat more slowly. Sometimes when we rush through our food it is not properly digested. This can lead to stomach noise and in addition is just not good for the digestion.
  • It is important to chew your food properly as well. Failing to do this can cause stomach growling and also burping and flatulence because you take in air as you eat.

Common gas generating foods are usually high in fibre and include:

Taking a quick walk after a big meal will help your digestion by speeding up gastric emptying (the process of your stomach sending food to the intestines). You don’t want to engage in a physical workout after eating, but a gentle 20 minutes walk will certainly help your digestion.

Sometimes stomach noises are not caused by food at all but by anxiety. When we are stressed or nervous, it can delay the gastric emptying process so cause stomach noise as well as the feeling of being tied up in knots.

Although in the majority of cases stomach noise can easily be remedied with a few lifestyle changes, sometimes it can be a signal of a digestive problem. If your stomach noise refuses to go away you should always visit your doctor for professional medical advice.
