The hickey is a purple-red bruise that may occur due to ruptured blood vessels beneath the skin surface. Simply put, it is a bruise that forms due to bleeding beneath the skin surface due to a minor injury to the superficial blood vessels or capillaries. They are called hickeys, love bites, or even kiss bites because they appear during the heat of passion, it is not something many people would like to be on display as it could be very embarrassing.
How long does it take for hickeys to disappear?
As the size of hickeys varies, so does the time it takes to heal vary. It could take a few days for a hickey to disappear, and it could take more than a week. A smaller hickey could take less time to disappear as compared to a large hickey.
You like many others have tried looking for how to get rid of hickeys very quickly, but it’s next to impossible for you to get rid of hickeys immediately because those blood vessels take time to heal. But all hope’s not lost, there are some remedies you can use to quicken the healing time.
- Cold compress – A cold compress may help to reduce inflammation and bleeding beneath the skin as the pain and sensitivity of the skin. Just grab some ice, wrap in a clean cloth and apply over the top of the bruise. For best results, the cold compress should be applied as soon as possible or 12 hours max since the hickey was formed.
- Anica creams- Anica creams are one of those dermatologically tested creams that can be applied over a hickey to help clear it up fast. The Anica cream is easy to find over the counter and is used in homeopathic remedies.
- Aloe vera gel- Aloe vera gel is another home remedy that can be used to reduce pain, skin swelling, and inflammation. Just apply a thin coat of the gel directly over the hickey two times a day.
- Peppermint oil- The main component of the peppermint essential oil is menthol, and menthol has great benefits as it aids to stimulate blood flow when applied which could also speed up the healing process. But you want to be careful as this essential oil can irritate the skin too. The best way to apply Peppermint oil or any other essential oil for that matter is to dilute the oil. You can dilute the peppermint oil with a carrier oil such as almond oil or jojoba oil. In 15 drops of the carrier oil add one of 2 drops of the peppermint oil and apply to the skin massaging with very little pressure. Never apply an essential oil directly to your skin it would only irritate it more and make things worse.
Hickeys can take little time to form but it takes a longer time to heal, while these remedies may speed up the healing process by several days and ease the inflammation. The bruise blood vessels just need time to heal themselves.
